Flood-control agencies in metropolitan Phoenix were preparing to use rainfall and streamflow sensor data to support road closures and emergency response if necessary.

Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich collapsed during an outdoor team workout at Sun Angel Stadium on Aug. 20, 2026, and remained hospitalized as of ASU’s Sept. 3 statement. ASU said coaches, training staff and a third party who had worked with the hockey team were present, and that it is reviewing the circumstances and related policies. Attorneys for Mayich’s family have alleged failures involving the workout’s intensity, water access and heat acclimatization; those allegations have not been independently established by ASU’s review.

Orison James “Jim” Chafin, a 54-year-old Korean War-era Navy veteran, was found murdered at Resthaven Cemetery in Glendale on Aug. 8, 1987. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office Cold Case Unit reopened the case in 2025, working with Glendale police after preserved evidence and renewed investigation produced a DNA lead. Authorities announced on Sept. 15, 2026, that DNA linked Gary Wayne Billups to evidence from the case, but Billups had died in June and cannot be prosecuted.

Arizona voters will elect a superintendent of public instruction on Nov. 3, with the winner serving a four-year term beginning in January. Republican Kimberly Yee is the state treasurer, while Democrat Teresa Leyba Ruiz is a longtime educator and former Glendale Community College president. Alyia Argyle, a 16-year-old Alta High School lacrosse player in Sandy, Utah, died after an epilepsy-related seizure on Aug. 21, 2026. Her teammates later completed her plan to clean up her mother’s backyard and turn it into a garden space for family gatherings and remembrance.
