The January 28, 2019 no-knock raid at Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas’ home on Harding Street in southeast Houston ended in a shootout that killed both residents and wounded police officers. Former HPD officer Gerald Goines was accused of fabricating the drug-buy information used to obtain the warrant; he was convicted of murder in 2024 and is serving a 60-year state sentence. Bryant pleaded guilty in 2021 to falsifying records and later cooperated with authorities in prosecutions arising from the raid.

Red tide is a naturally occurring bloom of the microscopic algae Karenia brevis, which produces brevetoxin that can harm marine life and cause respiratory irritation. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) began receiving reports of a bloom off Galveston on Sept. 8 and has monitored affected Upper Coast areas, including Bolivar Peninsula, Crystal Beach and Galveston Island. The agency directs human-health and seafood-consumption questions to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
